Living in the Soil
A snail, a worm and a group of young people are some of the characters who star in ‘Living in the Soil,’ a comic produced in the context of ‘The International Year of Soils’ that aims to raise awareness about the most significant environmental and social issues related to soil and its need for protection. Through some 60 sketches, the authors report various aspects of the characteristics, functions and implications related to the use of this non-renewable resource. It reflects both the view of humans and the living organisms that inhabit soil. The comic, which is conceived as an educational resource, is aimed both at children and the general public and for students at all educational levels.

Surface water gley soils form where precipitation water drains away into the underground strongly delayed only. Beneath a well permeable layer that is waterlogged after rainfall, there is a dense layer with low permeability. In the German soil classification, most soils affected by stagnating water belong to the Pseudogleys, those with an extended wet phase to the Stagnogleys. The international classification allocates these soils primarily to the Planosols and Stagnosols.

CCANW has announced opportunities for artists to apply for residencies linked to the Soil Culture project- its most ambitious programme to date, and a contribution to the UN International Year of Soils 2015.
The aim of Soil Culture is to use the arts to inspire a deeper public understanding of the importance of soil - a resource on which the whole of civilization depends, but which many take for granted. Healthy soils are essential for the production of the food required to feed a growing population.

It is a multimedia- interactive program with different modules that after outlining the study of soil components goes on to examine the main factors and processes of soil genesis explaining the mechanisms of soil processes. A better understanding of all these new ideas is facilitated by the use of animations, which can illustrate the processes in a more effective manner than static print media. The program ends with the possibility of self-assessment questions obtaining an automatic punctuation. The Action Soil of the Year in Germany
This was the background for members of the German Soil Science Society and the Federal Soil Association of Germany to initiate the action "Soil of the year" in 2004. Soil of the year 2005 was the Chernozem. Soil of the year 2006 was the Albic Luvisol. Soil of the year 2007 was the Podzol. Soil of the year 2008 is the Cambisol/ Arenosol. Soil of the year 2009 is the Calcareous Marsh. Soil of the year 2010 are Urbic Anthrosols/ Technosols. Soil of the Year 2011: Vega –Fluvic Cambisol or Fluvisol

The Colours of the Earth
A movie about soil. Nature affords different kinds of rocks, plants, animals and even soils. The latter being different in colour, depth, fertility, vary from place to place. Earth covers the terrestrial surface, it allows vegetables, animals and human beings to grow, it thus represents one of the most precious assets of humanity. This film is an invitation to learn more about the study of soil - pedology - highlighting its work practices and showing some of its characteristic landscapes. A simple and direct language, meant to make especially young people aware, explains to us all the importance of the soil as a resource which deserves to be known, protected and respected. The film participated to the First International Earth Science Film Festival (Firenze, 20-28 agosto 2004) and it has been selected for the environmental film festival 7° Cinemambiente (Torino, 22-29 ottobre 2004).

Walk-in soil map on "the world's arable land and their properties"
The University of Applied Scienes Osnabrück, section "General Soil Science and Geology” created in cooperation with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources Hannover a walk-in soil maps with information about the major agricultural soils of the Americas, Central and Eastern Europe. Center of the respective installations were 3 floor walk-in maps (each 4 x 4 m - see figure) with the soil type distribution according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB).
The soil maps include 42 information boards with information on the farmland in the languages German, English and Russian.
Each tablet contains key information about the properties to use and management and the dissemination of the soil. The selection of the soil was not only in terms of soil fertility but also upon their distribution.
The exhibition is designed so that it relatively easy to built up. This provides the opportunity to rent them to other facilities.

Media Catalogue for the Introduction of Soil-related Topics in School Teaching
Soils are one of the classic environmental media but do not by far receive the high regard and social attention that they deserve.
This is not least reflected in the often inadequate way in which the subject is dealt with in class at schools and vocational colleges. Recently, however, a positive new trend is becoming apparent. Those responsible for teaching are increasingly endeavoring to include soils more frequently into the natural sciences and environmental classes at school.
These efforts, however, often reach their limits rather quickly. Many of those responsible for teaching do not have the necessary basic know-ledge required to teach the subject. Furthermore, the teachers are often unaware of the existence of suitable materials that can be used in class.
For this reason, staff in the subject area of General Soil Science in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück have been building up and updating a media catalogue since 1998. This media catalogue gives a brief overview of existing materials related to soil science for use in class, as well as how to use them.
Last year, the fourth edition had appeared. In addition to media catalogue it includes material about typical soils of North-Germany and their appearance in the landscape. Here the teachers find pictures of typical soils endued with short and plain explanations, which can be used in class.

The tool is used both as an in-class and off-campus resource in various natural resource courses, such as soil, agriculture, forestry, environmental sciences, or geology, across British Columbia and beyond. One of the principle goals of this project was to partner with experts from the various institutions and pool their knowledge in the creation of this unique learning resource that would be available to anyone.

Following its surprise success at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, "DIRT! the Movie" --narrated by Jaime Lee Curtis-- brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political importance
of soil. The film takes the viewer inside the wonders of the soil by telling the story of Earth's
most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility--from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation. The movie shares the stories of experts from all over the world who study and are able to harness the beauty and power of a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with soil. The opening scenes of the film dive into the wonderment of the soil. Made from the same elements as the stars, plants and animals, and us, "dirt is very much alive." I live in the soil. What is Soil?
Soil is the top layer of the Earth’s surface, like frosting on a birthday cake!
It’s the stuff you play on in your backyard. Your grass grows on it. You might call it dirt instead of soil.
Soil is made from rocks that are broken up into tiny pieces, as well as dead leaves, roots, twigs, dead bugs, and stuff like that. It also has water and air in it.
