This page summarises the steps implemented in the model built to provide an assessment of soil erosion risk throughout Europe. It gives access to the following:

• The model runs only on processing cells. Processing cells are those that have a value in all of the database input layers.

• Data source: 250 m resolution CORINE Land Cover, SAI/JRC Ispra.
• Data processing: reclassification into 9 land use classes and resampling to 1 km resolution.

• Data source: Soil Geographical Database of Europe at scale 1.000.000, ESB/JRC Ispra.
• Data processing: crusting and erodibility parameters are deduced from the soil caractheristics using chained pedotranfer rules.

• Data source: 30 x 30 arc seconds (~1 x 1 km) resolution hydrologicaly correct digital elevation model (DEM), USGS HYDRO1K (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/hydro/).
• Data processing: slopes are computed from DEM, then classified into 8 classes.

• Data source: "Pfafsteter" watershed basins, USGS HYDRO1K (http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/hydro/);

• Data processing: land use, crusting, slope and erodibility parameters are combined through an expert system model at the cell level to produce an evaluation of sensitivity of the soils to erosion.

Results can then be aggregated by spatial integration units (SIU) thought an erosion sensitivity aggregation model.

• Data source: 25 years of daily meteorological data covering Europe at a resolution of 50 x 50 km cells, SAI/JRC Ispra.
• Data processing: seasonal rainfall depth are classified into quintiles and combined with seasonal rainfall intensity (3 classes) to evaluate an overall rainfall erosivity parameter.

• Data processing: sensitivity to erosion is combined with rainfall erosivity through the expert system model at the cell level to produce evaluations of seasonal and annual soil erosion risks.
