Valid for FOCUS_PEARL_3_3_3
PEARL contains a wizard
that generates FOCUS scenarios by guiding the user step by step through screens
to select the crop-location combinations and the substance and the application
scheme.
Detailed instructions for generating FOCUS scenarios can be
found in the Help (in main screen of PEARL user interface) following the
sequence:
Hard and software requirements
Operating
systems:
PEARL_3_3_3 is supported on Windows
NT 4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems. PEARL_3_3_3 is not
supported and has not been tested on other operating systems such as Windows
95, Windows 98 1st Edition, Windows 98 2nd Edition and
Windows ME operating systems. PEARL_3_3_3, however, is likely to run on these
operating systems, but technical support will not be provided in case of
problems.
Access
rights:
On Windows NT 4, Windows 2000 and
Windows XP machines, it is required to have Administrator rights during the
installation phase. After installation and running PEARL_3_3_3 for the first
time, you do not require Administrator rights anymore. You do require, however,
full access rights to the directory where the database is installed. This holds
for any user on your machine wanting to use PEARL_3_3_3.
If you don't have Administrator rights, you can ask somebody else who has on
your machine, to install the PEARL_3_3_3 software following the above
instructions. After logging on to your own account you should be able to have
full access to PEARL_3_3_3.
Preinstalled
software:
PEARL_3_3_3 does not require any
preinstalled software other than a decent working operating system.
Internal
memory:
PEARL_3_3_3 requires at least 64 Mb
internal memory, although sometimes problems occur when viewing very large
detailed output files with 64 Mb.
Hard
disk memory:
PEARL_3_3_3 requires 150 Mb for
installation, and around 40 Mb for output of every scenario.
Display:
Monitor with at least 1024x768, at
256 colors.
Processor:
The faster the better.
Installation instructions for computers on which PEARL_3_3_3 has not
been installed before (first time installs)
Windows NT4, Windows 2000, and
Windows XP systems where you HAVE Administrator rights:
1.
Run or continue the Setup.exe program and follow on screen
instructions,
2.
Launch PEARL_3_3_3 from the Setup.exe program as this will
continue the installation process with the InterBase installation (the first
time PEARL_3_3_3 is started, InterBase will be installed automatically, like
the other steps of the installation, this requires Administrator rights),
3.
For normal use, PEARL_3_3_3 can be started from the Start
menu or from the shortcut on your desktop.
Notes:
-
it is advised to keep the installation files somewhere on
your local machine as this can be used to repair damaged installations or to
remove an existing installation.
-
an existing PEARL_1_1_1 installation on your computer should
still be working fine.
-
PEARL_3_3_3 cannot be used on XP machines where "Fast
User Switching" is turned on, and you are not the first user
to log on to the system. This is caused by an InterBase bug which we cannot
fix. The problem does not occur if you are the first person to log on to your
system.
Windows NT4, Windows 2000, and
Windows XP systems where you DO NOT have Administrator rights:
1.
Cancel any installation now and logon to your computer with
a username that has Administrator rights,
2.
Determine and if necessary create a directory where the
database can be placed with full access rights,
3.
Run the Setup.exe program to install PEARL_3_3_3 and follow
on screen instructions, instruct the installer to install the database in the
abovementioned directory,
4.
Launch PEARL_3_3_3 from the Setup.exe program as this will
continue the installation process with the InterBase installation (the first
time PEARL_3_3_3 is started, InterBase will be installed automatically, like
the other steps of the installation, this requires Administrator rights),
5.
Exit PEARL_3_3_3,
6.
Logon to your system using your own account name and start PEARL_3_3_3
either from the desktop icon or from the Start menu. PEARL_3_3_3 should now
connect succesfully to the database.
If immediately after starting PEARL_3_3_3 in either way, you get a Windows
installer application instead of the PEARL_3_3_3 application, press Cancel and
manually create a shortcut that points to the PEARLGUI.exe file and start PEARL_3_3_3
from now on using that shortcut.
Notes:
-
it is advised to keep the installation files somewhere on
your local machine as this can be used to repair damaged installations or to
remove an existing installation.
-
an existing PEARL_1_1_1 installation on your computer should
still be working fine.
-
PEARL_3_3_3 cannot be used on XP machines where "Fast
User Switching" is turned on, and you are not the first user
to log on to the system. This is caused by an InterBase bug which we cannot
fix. The problem does not occur if you are the first person to log on to your
system.
Installation instructions for computers on which PEARL_2_2_2 has been
installed
PEARL_3_3_3
and PEARL_2_2_2 should be able to work next to each other ! You can simply
install PEARL_3_3_3 as described above, choose installation directories of your
own choice, as long as you avoid installation in directories with PEARL_2_2_2
files. You can open a PEARL_2_2_2 database from PEARL_3_3_3, but once opened
with PEARL_3_3_3, it cannot be opened with PEARL_2_2_2 ! So the best thing is
to make a copy first of the database if you still want to be able to open it
with PEARL_2_2_2 (PEARL_2_2_2 database files are typically found on C:\Program
Files\FOCUSPEARL_2_2_2\Database).
Note:
-
the PEARL_3_3_3 installer will NEVER replace an
existing database and directory with one from the installer files, similarly
when uninstalling PEARL_3_3_3, an existing database and directory will NEVER
be removed.
Uninstallation instructions for PEARL_3_3_3
1.
On Windows NT 4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines, make
sure you have Administrator rights and stop the “InterBase Guardian” service from
the Control Panel / Services item on Windows NT 4 or the Control Panel /
Administrative Tools / Services item on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
2.
Run “Uninstall InterBase” From the Start/Programs/PEARL_3_3_3
menu,
3.
Start the Setup.exe program of the original PEARL_3_3_3
installer files, and choose “Remove” to remove the remaining parts.
4.
If you want to get rid of PEARL_3_3_3 altogether, you could
now delete remaining files on the FOCUSPEARL_3_3_3 installation directory
(typically on C:\Program Files). Be aware that removing this directory will
also remove the database which, as mentioned earlier, is never removed by the
uninstallation procedure.
Known bugs
Nesting
of directories
When
the the path to the database file is long (more than around 45 characters),
problems can occur when making model runs. It is best to not
increase
the nesting beyond: C:\Program Files\FOCUSPEARL_3_3_3\Database.
XP
Fast User Switching
PEARL_3_3_3
cannot be used on XP machines where "Fast User Switching" is turned
on, and you are not the first user to log on to the system. This
is caused by an InterBase bug which we cannot fix. The problem does not occur
if you are the first person to log on to your system.
Uninstalling
InterBase
In
some cases, uninstalling InterBase directly after an install of InterBase,
causes an exception in the uninstall program. A system restart solves this
issue.
Digital
Signature for InterBase
In
some cases the installation of InterBase fails because your machine will tell
you it cannot find a required digital signature. This is caused by a strict
policy implemented by your local network administrators. Consult your IT
department to relax this policy to enable InterBase to install.
Different InterBase version
If
the PEARL_3_3_3 program detects that there is no InterBase installed
whatsoever, it will try to install InterBase 6.5, whereas if such an InterBase
6.5 installation already exists on the machine it will try to use this existing
installation. However, in the case that there is an existing installation but
with a different version than 6.5, PEARL_3_3_3 will refuse to install the 6.5
version, but will also refuse to startup because it cannot decide whether the
existing InterBase version is capable of working with the PEARL_3_3_3 database.
