- Data have been digitised by National Soil Resources Institute, Cranfield University, Silsoe UK - NSRI (HJ.M. Hollis, I.P. Holman, R.G.O. Burton). The project was financed as a Company Investment Propect by the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA), and steered by the ECPA GIS working group (J.R. Van de Veen, B. Erzgraber, A. Gurney, S. Hayes,. Hauck, A. Huber, T.Schad, D. Yon). The data originate from a study performed by the European Commission in 1982 (reference EUR 7940 EN).
- The DG JRC agrees to provide these data, free of charge, on behalf of ECPA, but the DG-JRC is not bound to justify the content and values contained therein.
- ECPA and the DG-JRC do not accept any liability whatsoever for any error, missing data or omission in the data, or for any loss or damage arising from its use.
- The permission to use the data specified above is granted on condition that, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are these data passed to third parties. Moreover they must NOT be used in any way for commercial gain or for purposes other than those specified above.
- The user agrees to:
a) Make proper reference to the source of the data when disseminating the results to which this agreement relates;
b) Participate in the verification of the data (e.g. by noting and reporting any errors or omissions discovered to the JRC).
Digital Dataset of European Groundwater Resources - version 1.0
Data are 6 ESRI shapefiles, zipped together (16.3 MB)
- Theme1 : Aquifers
- Theme2A : Groundwater hydrology, directions of groundwater flow and of water transfers;
- Theme2C : Groundwater hydrology, contours of the watertable or the potentiometric surface;
- Theme2W : Groundwater hydrology, springs;
- Theme2S : Groundwater hydrology, areas of seawater intrusion or saline groundwater;
- Theme3 : Groundwater abstraction
One set of the data are offered as ESRI shapefiles and the Spatial Reference System of the data is according to GISCO and is documented in the GISCO Database Manual, in Chapter 3 "Main characteristics of the GISCO reference database" under "Spatial Reference System". Here is a .prj file, which can be used in ArcView or ArcGIS in order to define the spatial reference of the layers.
Another set of the data are offered in the INSPIRE proposed ETRS_LAEA reference system. (see the associated projection file)
The zip download file contains also 2 extra shapefiles, to be used for displaying purposes only : the 1982 country boundaries of the covered countries (country_boundaries.shp) and the European coastlines (coastline.shp).
Legends for 5 themes are available in .avl format and included in the download file ; they are compatible with ArcView3.2. These legend files can be imported into ArcGis but there they are presented slightly different.
Notes from JRC :
- the Theme2S (areas of seawater intrusion or saline groundwater) is to be read with caution, if it is compared with what is written in the digitization project report.
- in the future, these data will also be availale as coverages.

| Purpose | I am contacting you for the urban-architectural and landscape consultation Luxembourg in Transition - Territorial visions for the decarbonized and resilient future of the Luxembourg functional region (https://luxembourgintransition.lu). I work for H+N+S landscape architects, within the consortium led by MVRDV. You can find the work of our team here: https://luxembourgintransition.lu/equipes/ In the third step of this consultation, we are studying the hydrological system in more detail. |
