Agriculture Field Parameters

Agriculture Field Parameters on NUTS-3 regions for Wind erosion research

The dataset contains averaged Field Size, Field Orientation, Field Length, Average Number of Images, Percentage of Large Fields and Length to Width Ratios for the EU 27 Memberstates and Switzerland, aggregated to NUTS region. The analysis is based on approximately 400 satellite images from the IMAGE2000 archive. Each image was segmented using a fractal net evolution approach, which is a region merging technique (Baatz and Schape, 2000).

Only agricultural areas were processed using data from the CORINE landuse classification. Agriculture areas were classified into a) large scale agriculture areas, which are prone to wind erosion events and b) into small scale agricultural areas and mixed agriculture, which are assumed to be non relevant to wind erosion events.

Values reported in the dataset are only concerning these large scale fields, clearly discernible in the satellite images on agricultural land. Therefore it should NOT be compared against an average field size reported for any NUTS region. Statistical field parameters (e.g. size, direction, length to witdh, etc) were reported for each large field, weighted for number of fields occurring in each INSPIRE Cell for the different satellite scenes and finally averaged for each INSPIRE 10km cell, The 10km results were than used to report values for each NUTS region.

Average field shape parameters are important for estimating wind erosion risk. The parameter reported is based on the fractal net evolution segmentation approach and a fuzzy classification of the Image2000 satellite archive, only for agricultural areas. Values reported are based on large, clearly discernible fields, which are prone to wind erosion. In total the following 6 maps are presented in 2 different formats (PDF, JPEG):

  • Field Size Area (ha) : The average field size for the reporting unit for wind erosion fields
  • Field Direction (in degrees) : The average direction of the field – by assuming that usually the longer side of the field is the main working direction
  • Length to Witdh Ratio: The average Length to Width Ratio on the agricultural fields
  • Field Length (Km): The average Length on the agricultural fields
  • Average Number of Images: The average number of images which have been averaged for this reporting unit
  • Percentage Agricultural Wind Erosion Susceptible fields/ non susceptible field : The percentage of agricultural area which could be clearly indentified with the applied method

Data

(Jul 2014) These data (Wind-erodible fraction of soil, Number of Erosiove days, Agriculture Field Parameters on NUTS-3 regions for Wind erosion research) are freely available upon request.  To get access to the data, please compile the online form; instructions will then follow how to download the data. The data download page will provide you access the page containing three available datasets: 1. Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ) ; 2. Index of Land Susceptibility to Wind Erosion (ILSWE) 1981-2010; 3. Wind-erodible fraction of soil (EF), and 4. Agriculture Field Parameters on NUTS-3 regions for Wind erosion research.
