Agri-Env Indicators

Geoland2 – Towards an operational GMES Land Monitoring Core Service: Agri-Environmental Indicators Core Information Service (AgriEnv CIS)

The Core Information Service(CIS) AgriEnv will efficiently contribute to the improvement of existing agri-environmental indicators by the effective integration of the Core Monitoring Services(CMS), which will provide an access to a full range of spatial scales, temporal scales and thematics. The integration of CMS in the agri-environmental field will also allow to develop new indicators. All these indicators will be provided to the end users in a pre-operational mode, and when relevant.

The prototype services developed by AgriEnv will provide significant and strong basis for the strategic monitoring of the European Community with respect to the implementation of Agri-Environmental Measures (AEM) and national Rural Development plans for the period 2007 – 2013. More precicely, AgriEnv indicators will allow to assess the initial situation and will form the basis for the development of the programme strategy.

Find more information in the Geoland 2 Executive Summary Document.   The Core Information Service(CIS) AgriEnv will be tested in the 4 Demonstration site (EU-08, EU-09, EU-10, EU-15)

Indicator/Product Name Definition Demonstation Sites
Service AgriEnv-01: Agriculture state
Land use changes indicator quantifying the land use change from agricultural to artificial surfaces between two reference dates – spatial scale to be defined EU-15, EU-10
Cropping patterns Indicator quantifying the change of area share between annual crops, permanent crops and grasslands between two reference dates – spatial scale to be defined EU-08, EU-09
Crop rotation pattern Indicator qualifying crop rotation patterns over three consecutive years – spatial scale to be defined EU-08, EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
-
Service AgriEnv-02: Agriculture trends
Extensification Indicator displaying the areal extend, trend and relative degree of extensification EU-10
Land abandonment Indicator displaying the area and rate of abandoned arable land EU-15
Agri-environmental measures effectiveness State and trends of riparian vegetation EU-10
-
Service AgriEnv-03: Pressure of farm management on water resources
Water abstraction by irrigation indicator quantifying the volumes of water needed for a nominal development of crops – spatial scale to be defined EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
Intermediate crops coverage rate indicator quantifying the percentage of arable land covered with intermediate crops in autumn and winter EU-09
-
Service AgriEnv-04: Pressure of farm management on soil resources
Bare soil rate indicator quantifying the area of arable land seen as bare soil (Monthly and annual estimates of the percentage of bare soil arable land at the catchment scale) EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
Regional soil erosion Regional map of the soil erosion risk EU-15
Local soil erosion Local map of the soil erosion risk EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
-
Service AgriEnv-05: Agricultural land use changes as driving force for sustainability – Biodiversity
Percentage of HNV farmland Percentage of HNV farmland per region Areas of High interest inside Spatial Regional Reference Framework
HNV farmland agricultural land use changes Land Use Change Accounts per HNV area. Land Use Change Accounts: Percentage of transformations between arable and grassland, and from arable/grassland to urban Areas of High interest inside Spatial Regional Reference Framework
Landscape coherence between intensive agricultural areas Percentage of transformations from arable to grassland between intensive agricultural areas per LANMAP2 units EU-08, EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
-
Service AgriEnv-06: Agricultural land use changes as driving force for sustainability – Landscape
Changes of landscape closedness/openness per region Percentage/size of Landscape Closedness vs Landscape Openness per LANMAP2 units determined by the presence/absence of forest vegetation, thereby influencing the degree of opennenn/closedness. Built-up (urban) are considered to contribute to "closedness". EU-08, EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
Changes of land use diversity per landscape unit Shannon index on landscape diversity for agricultural land use per LANMAP2- unit by tracking the evolution of indices of agricultural land use diversity as well as of selected landscape elements. EU-08, EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
Changes of landscape heritage functions per landscape unit Land use change characteristics in and adjacent to protected areas (IUCN Categories 4-6) and NUTS2/3 regions with high tourist visitor numbers EU-08, EU-09, EU-10, EU-15
