Alpine Region Reference Grids
For the sake of the ECALP project, three grid-shaped layers have been created covering the entire alpine region ; these layers are cell-shaped polygon ESRI shapefiles.
- alpine_100k contains 100km x 100km cells ;
- alpine_10k contains 10km x 10km cells ;
- alpine_1k contains 1km x 1km cells ;
Grid cells are aligned with the reference grid recommended during the 1st Workshop on European Reference Grids in the context of the INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) initiative. (workshop material, (draft) short proceedings ). The shapefiles are in the ETRS89 Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (ETRS_LAEA) co-ordinate system, also documented in the (draft) proceedings. The origin of the layers is defined at (x,y) = (3.800.000 m, 2.200.000 m) as can be seen on this figure; the extent is 1100 km longitudinal and 700 km latitudinal.
This makes that :
- alpine_100k contains 11 x 7 = 77 cells ;
- alpine_10k contains 110 x 70 = 7700 cells ;
- alpine_1k contains 1100 x 700 = 770000 cells ;
The attribute x_y labels each cell according to one of the proposed coding systems of the "Workshop on European Reference Grids" ; the label is a string consisting of two parts concatenated by a "_" ; the first part indicates the longitude of the lower left corner of the cell and the second part indicates the latitude of the lower left corner of the cell. The number of digits to indicate the longitude and latitude depend on the size of the cells within the file.
- for the alpine_100k, lat and lon are indicated with 2 digits ; example "38_22", indicating the cell with lower left corner at 3800000m lon and 2200000m lat ;
- for the alpine_10k, lat and lon are indicated with 3 digits ; example "387_226", indicating the cell with lower left corner at 3870000m lon and 2260000m lat ;
- for the alpine_1k, lat and lon are indicated with 4 digits ; example "3872_2268", indicating the cell with lower left corner at 3872000m lon and 2268000m lat ;
- alpine_100k.zip (3 KB) (100km x 100 km cells) ;
- alpine_10k.zip (184 KB)(10km x 10km cells) ;
- alpine_1k.zip (19412 KB)(1km x 1km cells) ;
Alpine Region GIS data
For the sake of the ECALP project, a number of common GIS layers covering the alpine region are made available in ESRI shapefile or GRID format. These data have been compiled from sources which are freely available for use. The shapefiles are in the INSPIRE recommended ETRS89 Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (ETRS_LAEA) co-ordinate system. The 1k and 10k grids are aligned with the Alpine Region Reference Grids
