3rd EUSO Stakeholders Forum

 Third EUSO Stakeholders Forum

3rd EUSO Stakeholders Forum

Currently,  more than 60% of the EU’s soils are considered to be in an unhealthy state. The newly developed Soil Health Dashboard within the European Union Soil Observatory (EUSO) shows the location and estimates the extent of unhealthy soils in the European Union (EU), as well as the degradation processes behind them.

The EUSO is a stepping-stone in achieving healthy soils ambition by 2050, by identifying the most pressing drivers of soil degradation, but also by helping Member States identifying areas under higher pressure. Aligned with the European Commission’s proposal for a Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law, the EUSO’s dashboard represents a first step towards the assessment of soil health in the EU, but also the progress of soil-related EU policies.

In this context, the EUSO convened its 3rd Stakeholder Forum, an annual event organised by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) whose purpose is to actively engage and exchange with the soil community, from policy makers and scientists to local actors, civil society representatives and citizens.  The 3rd  Stakeholders Forum was an opportunity for anyone interested in soils to update and exchange on various themes including latest developments in soil policy, state of soil science, new and ongoing soil research projects as well as methods to assess soil health in the EU and beyond.

The 3rd EUSO Stakeholders Forum took place in two parts:

15-17 November 2023:
EUSO Working Groups Meetings (online).
Technical Working Groups meeting, 15-17 November 2023 (online meeting). The EUSO Technical Working Groups (TWG) meet to discuss technical advances on the following topics: soil pollution, soil data sharing, soil monitoring, soil erosion, soil carbon and soil biodiversity. Download the final Agenda (9.11.23)

21-23 November 2023:
European Soil Mission Week (physical presence - Soil Mission Week).
The European Soil Mission Week, Madrid - Spain, 21-23 November 2023 (in-person meeting). This event was organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) in the context of the Horizon Europe Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ (Mission Soil) together with the JRC’s EUSO and the EU funded project PREPSOIL; the outcomes of the TWG sessions of the week before were presented and discussed.
