MAIN OBJECTIVES
Questions that the technical working group will address:
  • What are policy needs on soil biodiversity? Which are the links between soil biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services?
  • How soil biodiversity can be included into soil health assessment?
  • How do we integrate national, EU and global monitoring schemes for soil biodiversity?
  • How is soil biodiversity doing? Is soil biodiversity declining? Do we have evidence of that?
  • How do we convert the available knowledge on soil biodiversity into indicators that can be easily applied to policy development and implementation?

Expected output(s): report(s) and/or policy brief(s).

2026 --

European Soil Biodiversity Monitoring symposium
Following the recent entry into force of the Soil Monitoring Directive, key discussions are needed on monitoring standards and long-term targets (soil descriptors) for soil biodiversity. To support this, the JRC's Soil Team will host its first European Soil Biodiversity Monitoring symposium on 2-3 February 2026.

On-site registrations are now closed; however, selected sessions will be livestreamed (non-interactive hybrid format), with opportunities for feedback via an open chat. In the agenda below, the livestreamed brainstorming sessions will build on the discussions held during the break-out groups (not streamed) and will focus on identifying key points and conclusions.
